There is something for everyone I guess- just because I don't feel that would be right for me or my daughter, doesn't mean it's not right for someone else.
ReplyDelete:)
I don't think I have an opinion on this one! lol I don't have a problem with it as such, but I've never thought much of boxing.
ReplyDeleteNo. 4.
ReplyDeleteIf girls want to box they should be able to.
Renee xoxo
Boxing is a sport ... right? With rules etc? And it's for charity and no one dies.
ReplyDeleteExcept in that movie with Hilary Swank, 'Million Dollar Baby.'
It's not my cup of tea, but it's a supervised activity that builds a sense of achievement. Then good. :)
Hi Tom,
ReplyDeleteInteresting post and questions.
Here are my answers in no particular order.
- I think that female boxing can definitely be a form of charity. I am not against it. Just as long as the money raised is used as for the actual cause, I am all for it. I don't have a problem with what people do for charity. It only becomes a problem when the money and awareness raised is used for someone's personal gain, instead of using it for the initial cause.
-I did martial arts for about 20 years. I definitely think boxing, like any other sport can be used to help girls develop self esteem. Not only are they getting excercise and staying in shape, but they are learning how to defend themselves. That in itself is very empowering as it helps teach women how to defend themselves, and there is no greater gift to give a young girl.
- I am sure boxing can help women go into MMA fighting eventually. But I hear that is a difficult field to get into, even for men. Women have it that much harder in what you would call a man's world.
- Boxing can totally be for women. However, just because women should be allowed to do it does not necessarily mean that it will be as popular as men doing it. That's okay with me. Somethings are just more popular with men, and some are things are more female dominated. Boxing as a sport just happens to be more male dominated. Not everything is gender neutral.
But just because it is more male dominated doesn't mean that women should not be able to get in the field.
Hope that answers your questions.
I think that if it is a sport that they are interested in- they should go for it! I personally would NEVER do it- but if they enjoy it and it is for charity- I say go for it!
ReplyDeleteIf it is something they want to do, fine. Boys go into sports for the same reasons girls go into sports, to feel a sense of power, to become stronger.
ReplyDeleteWhoa,
ReplyDeleteChick fighting...hmmm,,,what will they be wearing?
That sounds like gold on the internet baby!
Tom
Oh..i wish I had a punchng bag..girls need to get *stuff* out too so why not boxing
ReplyDeleteHmmm...I take a kickboxing class twice a week. I do it for exercise and for social interaction. I do think it empowers me. I'm not too worried about walking the dog at night. (Of course, we live in town of about 40,000 in Iowa...Not many places could be safer.) The charity part is interesting. I couldn't open the link, my virusware wouldn't let me go there.
ReplyDeleteBoxing isn't something I like to watch at all. At first the idea of young girls boxing for charity sounded strange. But if there are people who want to participate, and the parents okay it, I think they have every right to.
ReplyDeleteI'm not into boxing. Fighting. The whole thing does not appeal to me. I think there are better, less potentially destructive, ways to show grace and balance.
ReplyDeleteI am surprised at the comments here. I don't understand why anyone would box, most especially women.
ReplyDeleteI always think of women as the ones to bring peace to the world, as the ones who will teach the rest of the world that violence in any form is not necessary, ever.Punching people is not something I think we should even call a sport.I am so surprised I'm the only one who thinks this, really. jeNN
1. I don’t think it matters.
ReplyDeleteIf you accept female boxing why wouldn't you accept a charity sponsored by female boxers?
It’s like any other social group out there we accept.
2. It says it doesn't matter whom you are in life, you could still be like everyone else and do what other people have the right to do.
Can a woman be a mother and go to a job.
If that job were being a boxer would it make her less of a mother?
We don't have to be like those we admire but we could imitate the benevolence.
3.They already have female MMA but still, I don't think it matters anymore.
4.Should guys?
I love boxing as a sport.
Two predators feeling their way around trying to figure out how to be king of the hill without getting hurt bad.
I have watched thousands of matches and have enjoyed most of them.
Those I didn’t were during the 90s when all they did was get drugged up boxers to bash each other toe to toe until the one with the softest head fell down.
That’s not boxing.
I watch MMA to but I prefer boxing.
I like the wrestling aspect of it because of the planning and execution of it but when it gets down to the striking, it’s totally brutal.
They both have their brutality I guess but also their finesse as well in some ways but they cater to our animal instinct.
We all have a beast inside us that needs to be released and events such as this is one way of doing it by giving us the opportunity to back one of the fighters in this act which many of us wish we could do ourselves but can’t for any of many reasons.
Main one being we don’t want to get our butts kicked.
Now to the question of women boxers.
In nature, the lioness is the hunter and fights off predators.
Why shouldn’t human females be able to fight?
Surely the men can’t be scared of a couple of itty bitty females HA HA HA
It doesn’t matter in my opinion.
All the power to them for their enormous and generous hearts in the ring or out.
I think it’s great that women have the chance to be what they want to be in a world where some countries force their women to hide behind a curtain of fear
Perhaps I need to clarify my stance...In kickboxing we kick and punch a bag...not each other.
ReplyDeleteI went to a professional hockey game (once) and had to leave after about 15 minutes. I only stayed that long because it was a "company" trip.
I don't watch boxing either.
(I was feeling a little disliked by your other readers, Tom.)
Boxing is good for boys and girls, so long as they can avoid any brain or other injuries.
ReplyDeleteHi nice blog.. doing a good job..
ReplyDeletei don't like boxing. for boys or girls...
ReplyDeleteI couldn't imagine a wife with cauliflower ears.
ReplyDeleteI do not like fighting in any form......girls fighting ...so sad and cruel!
ReplyDeleteI am not a fan of boxing no matter what the sex is, but I think is all right, there are much worst things going on in this world
ReplyDeleteGirls, boys, whatever...I don't know that physical violence for sport ever sends a good message.
ReplyDelete:) It is fascinating how your questions always provoke one to think.
ReplyDeleteAnd I just realized in this case, I can't say I lean either for or against. If boxing makes women happy (those who box), then more power to them. If they managae to raise the money for a charity doing sth they enjoy, all the better. I can't imagine ever boxing for sport because, if you hit me, it's not sport to me. :) But that goes for male boxing as well.
I doubt if such sensitive looking girls can do boxing. For fun - goood idea and for charity - sure. The charity money must be properly utilised for the purpose it has been collected. Thats what I think.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes.

This may sound sexist, and I don't mean to sound sexist, but girls should not be boxing a all. It's a blood sport, and I don't like it for men or women.
If boxing didn't exist, and if it were invented today, there would be as much outrage against it as there is against Michael Virk's participation in dog fights, or any other kind of animal fights. So why is it okay for human beings? People do die in boxing matches.
I think boxing as a "sport" shows human beings at their very lowest common denominator.

ReplyDeleteI have no problem viewing girls boxing as a sport, and one that can help them develop into mature and respectful - not to mention physically powerful - women. I am a bit taken aback by the attire they are wearing in the photos on the site, which makes the sport seem much sexier than I think it actually is.
ReplyDeleteI don't like the idea of anyone boxing really. I personally don't think beating anyone should be a sport. I think we need more creative ways for charity. I think it sends a wrong message. It's fine as an excercise and very effective in promoting health but not if it becomes one on one physical.
ReplyDeleteAbout the listings for our Charities I love them.I'm #23. So exciting. You really pulled it together and I am very pleased with the contibuted blog. You should be the one to take a bow. Again did I say I was impressed?
Tom: While I love the MMA and UFC and we had a boxing ring out in the barn...I'm not sure that it sends the right message to women. I am a traditionalist in some aspects. I don't believe women should be at war..except for being nurses and doctors...and I don't think young girls should get fluid filled ears...or their brain hit so that they get a concussion! That could lead to edema to the brain...worse the girl could be on antiseizure medication.. Grown women and men can make their own decisions, but our youth is way to impressionalble! Just my thoughts...Merry Christmas
ReplyDeleteInteresting topic...
ReplyDelete1)I find boxing an exceptionally brutal and mindless sport but if these girls are enjoying themselves whilst doing something positive for others who are in need I say go for it!
2)I feel this sport can be very empowering and have an extremely positive effect on the self esteem as well as the physical well being of girls and women in this day and age.
Besides, there is nothing wrong with being able to protect one's self and hit back should the need arise ;-)
4) We are all so different, so diverse, and as induviduals we should pursue the activities and lifestyles that bring pleasure to us regardless of sex and the opinions of others.
Hey there. I hope you're having a good weekend. It's been cold and rainy here. Our internet keeps going out so I did want to leave a comment on your blog. Take care. Have a great week. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant.
ReplyDeleteNo
No
Yes :)
This turns my stomach. There are way better ways to raise money for charity.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I have mixed feelings on this topic.
ReplyDeleteOn one hand, I think it's important for women to be physically active and know how to protect themselves. Obviously, boxing can help with both those aspects.
But, I'm not sure if I like the idea of women boxing...it's just such a brutal sport. I wouldn't like the idea of any of my friends or even someday my own daughters doing this.
I'm torn.
1-What do you think of girls boxing as a form of charity?
ReplyDeleteI've always thought of Boxing as a sort of midless sport, but grew up with a Dad who loved to watch it. I get the fitness aspect of it, and as long as they wear proper head gear...and don't play to KO I'm alright with it. There is a lot of training and strategy to it.
2-Does this send a bad message to girls or does it raise the esteem of young girls?
I don't think it sends a bad message. ..a wierd one maybe. I'm a bit wierded out at doing it for charity, but I think, like any other sport, it raises self esteem.
3-Is this just a way to set up a payday for women to go into MMA fighting eventually?
I don't think so. I think it's no different than other athletes raising funds.
4-Should girls be boxing at all
If they want to, sure why not? Just for points though, not to knock out...that's very bad for your brain.
I am very much pro these girls boxing. For one thing girls should be able to do whatever they want and be restricted by gender roles. Also boxing is a disipline and is not just about hitting each other it teaches mental as well as physical strength and lots of life skill s are learnt though competition.
ReplyDeleteI get really angry about people who are anti sports having winners and losers for children losing is a valuable lesson and the skills needed to cope with losing are just as important as those needed to win. I see this in the dance world all the time.
Thanks for the blog support Tom! Hope you have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
ReplyDeletewho cares if they have vaginas? People should always fight. Otherwise we would not have reality tv.
ReplyDeleteHey, Tom! Thanks for stopping by my blog earlier in the month. Here are my thoughts on girls boxing and charity.
ReplyDeleteFirst - I like the analogy - fighting....fighting poverty, fighting to do good, fighting to survive.
Second - I hate to see people get hurt...but sports comes with risk and boxing is very high risk with head injuries and later in life brain damage results.
Third - I think people should be free to do what they want with regards to sports.... but, personally, I don't think I would encourage young girls to do this..maybe after they get older, like 18, as an adult I think it's their choice.
Fourth - I'm still struggling with the brain damage thing but I like to idea of boxing a big hanging bag....it doesn't hit back!
Thought provoking entry, Tom!
PS: I couldn't get the link to work so I found another one about the Golden Gloves and some perspective...I like that they wear headgear! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2ZhT-MUeqE&feature=player_embedded
A thought provoking post, Tom! I live in a large old building that has a full gym on the ground floor. Two nights a week, a group of very young girls, and another of teen girls participate in cheer leading classes. I'm not particularly an enthusiast of cheerleaders, but I can see how they are building self-confidence. Boxing definitely helps that, and for some girls (especially those who may have suffered abuse) it may be particularly important as a way to vent, and to feel as if they can better protect themselves.
ReplyDeleteI think that this, like most things, isn't something that one needs to consider as yes or no. It's complex! I could see it being part of a school curriculum alongside a course on compassionate communication...
ps thanks for stopping by my blog. I appreciate your comment!
In my documentary, Sweet Remedy, I featured Spice Williams-Crosby, a stunt-woman in Hollywood, a vegan bodybuilder and a martial artist. In it, she was boxing a man - and doing quite well, I might add. Boxing may not be for me personally, but then again, neither is skydiving nor gymnastics. That doesn't mean that any of these things are not valid human endeavors. Human is the operative word here. To each his - or her- own!
ReplyDeleteI personally LOVE boxing & MMA. I think if it is something that a girl has dreamed of doing...then she should pursue her passion. It can be a bit violent & I'm sure she will find out soon enough if it's really for her.
ReplyDeleteGiving back to charity in any forum is a wonderful thing!
Thanks for stopping by my blog!
It is admirable for any sports organization or community group to develop a charity event. As for the question of girls boxing I would say "why not?" It is a legitimate sport and it requires physical and mental discipline and strength. Those are valuable qualities for anyone, regardless of gender. I've always wondered why there haven't been any women's football teams.
ReplyDeleteI don't have the slightest problem with girls boxing. If there are rules to the sport and everyone sticks to the rules, then let them have a go at it. And it isn't like anyone is compelled to participate in the doing or the watching.
ReplyDeleteI think it's great, as long as they are completely and modestly dressed and properly trained.
ReplyDeleteThe last thing it needs to be is a jello wrestling fundraiser!
Just popping by to wish you a Happy Christmas! X
ReplyDeleteTom: I wrote my last blog for you...Letting you in a real sight of my life!!Thinking of you...stop by and at least read it!! It is because of ou I wrote it!!Merry Christmas
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas to blog owner and blog readers. :)
ReplyDeleteBest wishes.
I don't mind if anybody wants to learn how to box but I wouldn't recommend it or encourage it.
ReplyDeleteToo much physical damage.
I have no problem at all with girls boxing - I do feel that it raises their esteem, as well. As long as they keep in mind the proper venue to use such skills (such as a boxing ring and not for street fighting) I think everything is fine!! :)
ReplyDeleteI don't like girls boxing...I think somehow it's against woman's nature...
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoying your Christmas time dear Tom, love and greetings from Norway...
Hi Tom,
ReplyDeleteVery intersting article! Boxing in general is tough on the body. I have a female patient that boxed alot in the past. She had to quit due to excessive brain trauma. There probably are better ways to raise money. I vote no on this one.
Thanks,
Dr. Bob Moulas
