Flyfishing charity?

(picture - a group of men fly fishing on a perfect day half of them are cancer patients)

Yesterday I was speaking to a a business associate in another state and he told me about a charity that works with male cancer patients. --- But the twist on it was that they took people men fly fishing. I am not into fishing but what I found interesting is they had more volunteers than they had cancer victims.... The charity was set up so that a cancer patient would have a fly fishing buddy.

He did tell me there was one for women too. What do you think about charities like this one?

  1. I'd have to know a lot more about it but I've recently discovered fishing (over the last 3 years) and find it to be soothing and restful. It allows me to get close to nature.. which can be so good for healing what ails you. The high volunteer-to-patient ratio tells me that they agree.. though I'm not sure if it's with the patients' best interests in mind. And I'm not sure why they'd separate men from women in this way. Need more info. :)

  2. So the women's version is for fly fishing buddies too? Do that many women fly fish?

  3. i think it's a great way to set up a foundation. one that does more than gather money.

and to stephanie above, i fly fish all of the time and i'm seeing a lot more women out there each year. and this may be a way to get more women involved in such a nice adventure

  4. Funny three women posting about flyfishing. Yes there are quite a few women that fly fish... IN COLORADO where this is based from what they told me. I am not in Colorado but the charity is based there.

I am not really much of a fly fisherman. I have the viewpoint for myself at least that there is a fine line between fishing and being an idiot on the shoreline. -- But that is just for me.

Thank you Hillary, Stephanie and Danielle for posting.

  5. Now, these volunteers of which there seem to be more than necessary, are they volunteering because they care about cancer patients or because they get a free fly-fishing trip out of the deal? To me, that makes a difference as to whether or not this is truly charity. The organization can call itself that, even though its workers aren't there out of the kindness of their hearts.

  6. I think it's wonderful, myself. Fly fishing has been shown to be a very soothing and relaxing sport, as well as the fact that the casting motion can help to gently heal.

There are now quite a few fly fishing charities in both North America and the UK.
